At Kunes Ford of Antioch, community is at the heart of everything we do—and sometimes, that means bringing together horsepower, heart, and hometown talent for an unforgettable event.

In a recent episode of Kunes Car Convos, General Manager Jesse Jaramillo hit the road in a 2026 Ford Mustang with a very special guest: 15-year-old lightning sprint car driver Tucker Richards. What followed was a high-energy conversation about racing, determination, and an exciting upcoming fundraiser you won’t want to miss.

A Rising Star in the Making

Tucker Richards isn’t your average teenager. While most 15-year-olds are just getting their learner’s permits, Tucker is already competing in lightning sprint car racing—a fast-paced, high-adrenaline motorsport that demands skill, focus, and fearlessness.

“I’ve been racing since I was six,” Tucker shared during the drive.

From his early days in go-karts to now piloting a lightning sprint car powered by a 1000cc motorcycle engine, Tucker has steadily climbed the ranks of grassroots racing. His passion is undeniable—and so is his talent.

“I liked how they move, how fast they were… just one little move can change anything and everything,” he said about what drew him to sprint cars.

That mindset has already led to major accomplishments, including multiple championships and a standout first win in a lightning sprint last season—where he dominated the field.

What Is a Lightning Sprint Car?

For those new to the sport, lightning sprint cars are compact, open-wheel race cars that pack an incredible power-to-weight ratio. They may look minimal—with just a frame, wings, and engine—but don’t let that fool you.

“They’re basically just enough for you and the engine… but they’re crazy fast,” Tucker explained.

With adjustable wings that control downforce and handling, drivers like Tucker constantly adapt to track conditions, weather, and competition. It’s a sport that blends mechanical knowledge with split-second decision-making.

Racing Is a Family Affair

Behind every young racer is a strong support system, and for Tucker, that starts with his dad.

“If I didn’t have my dad, I would not be where I’m at right now,” Tucker said.

From building cars to fine-tuning setups, Tucker’s family has played a huge role in his journey. His father’s own racing background adds another layer of inspiration, making this more than just a hobby—it’s a shared passion.

The Thrill—and Reality—of Racing

Sprint car racing isn’t just about speed; it’s about resilience.

Tucker recalled a race where mechanical failure ended a strong run and another where he flipped his car—walking away unharmed thanks to advanced safety gear.

“We’re really strapped in just to be safe,” he explained, detailing the multi-point harnesses and head-and-neck restraints that protect drivers.

Moments like these highlight both the risks and the discipline required in the sport.

Join Us for a Special Fundraiser Event

Inspired by Tucker’s journey and passion, Kunes Ford of Antioch is proud to host a special fundraising event in his honor.

“A couple weeks after [the season starts], we have a fundraiser at the Ford store in Antioch… we’re going to bring the sprint car out there,” Jesse shared.

What to Expect:

  • See Tucker’s lightning sprint car up close
  • Let kids sit inside a real race car
  • Meet Tucker and hear his story firsthand
  • Support a young local athlete chasing big dreams
  • Enjoy a fun, family-friendly atmosphere

The goal? To inspire the next generation of racers and bring the community together around a shared love of motorsports.

“That’s the whole point… get some new racers and draw a bigger crowd,” Tucker said.

Mark Your Calendars

Tucker’s racing season kicks off May 2nd at Wilmot Raceway, his home track, where he’ll compete against some of the best in the region.

“We’ll make sure to be there. We’ll root Tucker on,” Jesse added.

And shortly after, you’ll have your chance to meet him right here at Kunes Ford of Antioch.

The Future Is Fast

With his sights set on a professional racing career, Tucker Richards is just getting started.

“I’d like to say you should remember my name,” he said with confidence.

Driving car #13, fueled by passion and backed by a supportive community, Tucker represents everything we love about local sports—dedication, grit, and big dreams.
