Kunes Car Convos – Antioch Community High School

Published on Jun 6, 2025 by Matthew Kroll

Featuring: Principal Dr. Michael Berrie & Cardinal Crazy of Antioch Community High School

Welcome Aboard

Jesse Jaramillo kicks off another community-driven episode of Kunes Car Convos by welcoming two very special guests: Dr. Michael Berrie, principal of Antioch Community High School, and the high-energy spirit leader, Cardinal Crazy, the school’s brand-new mascot.

They hit the streets of Antioch in style, riding in a 2025 Ford F-150 Lariat, diving deep into the vibrant culture of the school and the tight-knit community surrounding it.

The Main Event: More Than Just a Fundraiser

Dr. Berrie reflects on The Main Event, a flagship fundraiser supported by local businesses like Kunes. “It was fantastic,” he said. “Kunis was a phenomenal sponsor, and the money raised goes directly back to the students and staff.”

One of the most competitive—and hilarious—auction items? Premium parking spots for students. “Parents go big on those spots,” laughed Berrie, “but every dollar raised helps enhance the student experience.”

Raising Funds, Fueling Dreams

Jesse and Dr. Berrie explain how the funds raised are used—from tailgates for the student spirit section to field trips and classroom enhancements. “Kids submit proposals,” Berrie explains. “Whether it’s pizza for a game day tailgate or supplies for a science project, it’s all about enriching their experience without relying on taxpayer dollars.”

A Community Steeped in Legacy

Antioch isn’t just a location—it’s a legacy. Dr. Berrie shares a powerful moment: “At freshman orientation, one parent told me their child represented the fifth generation in their family to attend this school.”

Jesse adds, “That’s the Antioch charm—Antioch Pizza, Anastasia’s, mom-and-pop shops, and of course, the people. It’s why we live, work, and play here.”

What It Means to Be Principal

Dr. Berrie lights up when talking about his role: “I get to hang out with the Cardinal Crazy and the future of America. That’s the joy of being principal.” A former social studies teacher, he still believes in the power of relationships and shared experiences.

Highlights of the 2025 School Year

It’s been a banner year at Antioch Community High School. From the girls’ softball team finishing second in state, to a record number of Illinois State Scholars, to moving performances in the school’s musical and choir concerts, Dr. Berrie praises the incredible talents and dedication of the students and staff.

“Every day is a highlight,” he says. “Our students shine in the classroom, on the stage, and on the field.”

Cardinal Crazy: The New Face of School Spirit

This year also marked the debut of Cardinal Crazy, a professionally designed mascot brought to life thanks to the school’s booster club, Sequoia Pride. Inspired by iconic characters like the Philly Phanatic, the new mascot has brought energy and joy to the halls.

“He’s not just fun—he’s part of the team,” says Berrie. “Kids love him, and he’s even joined the volleyball squad!”

Why Choose Antioch Community High School?

To parents weighing their options, Dr. Berrie has a clear message: “Antioch offers a phenomenal education, a deeply supportive community, and just the right size—about 1,200 students. It’s a place where your child will be seen, supported, and celebrated.”

Looking Ahead: Summer Plans & Continued Partnership

As summer rolls in, Dr. Berrie will be hard at work, with maybe a few long weekends sprinkled in. Kunes Ford is also planning expanded partnerships with the high school, including pickup and delivery programs and more fundraising efforts.

“We’re just getting started,” says Jesse. “The partnership with Antioch Community High School is something we’re incredibly proud of.”

Wrapping Up

With the sunroof open and spirits high, the episode closes with laughs, gratitude, and excitement for what’s next.

“Thank you again to Sequoia Pride, Antioch Community High School, and the incredible students and staff,” Jesse says. “And of course—Cardinal Crazy, you’re the real MVP today!”

Until next time, stay tuned and keep supporting local—because community drives everything at Kunes Ford of Antioch.
