Starting at $28,350, the Fathom is the most affordable electric vehicle Ford has ever built. This is not a stripped-down compromise. It is the first vehicle on Ford's brand-new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, the foundation Ford is building its electric future on.

Ford projects the Fathom will offer more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, seat five comfortably, and arrive loaded with technology people ask for, including next-generation BlueCruise for hands-free highway driving, a large touchscreen with navigation powered by Apple Maps, a Digital Key, Ford app remote control, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Bidirectional power capability means the Fathom can give energy back, not just take it.

Ford did not reach into the back catalog for this one. Names like the F-150 Lightning borrowed from trucks of the past, but the Fathom is something new, and its name has depth, which is rather the point.

A fathom is one of the oldest units of measure at sea, roughly six feet, based on the span of a sailor's outstretched arms and historically used to gauge how deep the water ran beneath the hull. Ford chose it to signal a truck designed around a deep understanding of how people really live: open arms, room to welcome you in, and more going on beneath the surface than you would expect.

Ford CEO Jim Farley has gone even further, calling the platform behind the Fathom the company's "Model T moment." The comparison is deliberate. The Fathom's roughly $30,000 target is close to what a Ford Model T cost a century ago, adjusted for inflation. In other words, Ford is trying to do for the electric truck what the Model T did for the car: turn it into something ordinary people can own.
